Carpet Basics

Carpet Types

Cut pile - twist, velvet, saxony and shag

Loop pile - level loop and patterned / high low loop

Cut and Loop pile - a mix of cut pile and loop pile used to create patterns and textures

Commonly used terms

Pile weight - the amount of yarn / fiber used to make a square yard / meter of carpet. Generally the higher the weight the better the carpet.

Pile Density - how tightly the fiber / yarn is stitched together, often referred to as gauge - 10th gauge = 10 stitches / inch. A high density carpet improves resistance to crushing, feels better underfoot and improves long term durability.

Pile Height - unless a carpet has high density then pile height will not reduce carpet wear or reduce crushing. A longer pile will make the carpet feel softer but if it has low density it will crush and mat more than a shorter, denser carpet.

Pile Twist -
the higher the number of twists the better the resistance to matting and crushing.

Pile fiber -
wool, nylon, polyester, polypropylene are the most common. Man made fibers have excellent stain and fade resistance and if a dense medium pile carpet is purchased will last and look good for years.
Wool has excellent resistance to soiling, staining, crushing and is also resistant to fire
